CoolSculpting (cryolipolysis)

Cryolipolysis (controlled cooling)

CoolSculpting (cryolipolysis) reduces stubborn fat in defined treatment zones — abdomen, flanks, inner and outer thighs, submental, upper arm. The destroyed fat cells are cleared by the body over months and do not return.

What it is

CoolSculpting is the FDA-cleared cryolipolysis device for non-surgical fat reduction. Controlled cooling selectively damages fat cells without affecting overlying skin or surrounding tissue. The damaged cells are cleared by the lymphatic system over weeks to months. Treated cells do not return.

How we approach it

The first visit is candor about goals. This is a contour tool, not a weight-loss tool. Best candidates are within ten to fifteen pounds of their target weight and have specific, pinchable areas they want reduced.

Mapping is done in front of a mirror, in standing position, in your normal posture. We discuss what one session can realistically achieve versus what may take two or three.

For patients whose primary goal is weight loss, we discuss medical weight management as a different path. For patients whose primary concern is skin laxity rather than fat, we route to skin-tightening tools.

What to expect

Each treated area takes thirty-five to sixty minutes. The first few minutes are intense cold; the area then numbs. After the cycle, a brief massage to the treated zone. Soreness, numbness, and occasional bruising follow for one to three weeks.

Visible reduction begins at six to twelve weeks. Final result for a given session is judged at three to four months. Most zones require one to three sessions.

Candidacy

Best for patients near goal weight with discrete unwanted fat in defined zones. Not for primary weight loss, for patients with cold-related blood disorders, significant hernia in the area, or pregnancy.

Indicated for

  • Patients near their goal weight with discrete pinchable fat that diet and exercise do not address
  • Defined treatment zones — flanks, abdomen, thighs, submental, upper arm
  • Patients who can plan a multi-month timeline before judging results

Not a candidate if

  • Significant weight loss as a primary goal — this is contour, not weight loss
  • Patients with cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease, or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria
  • Significant hernia in the treatment area
  • Pregnant or nursing patients

Before your visit

  • Most areas need 1–3 sessions per zone for full effect
  • Soreness, numbness, and bruising are common for 1–3 weeks
  • Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia is a rare known complication (~0.05–0.1%) — recognized and managed if it occurs
